I find the "Lord of the Rings" tabletop rules from GamesWorkshop quite nice, they are simple, sufficiently detailed and the stats can be more easily transferred to most of the 25mm figures than Warhammer. Well, GW's philosophy seems to be to sell not only their miniatures but also the statistics for them.

its true i have yet to try these rules ive been held back by my dislike of the whole games workshop way of business , which in my eyes is pretty crass. im really interested in a set of rules which combines roleplaying rules for a group of adventures and then rules for skirmish/mass combat when involved in these type storys/campaingns cheers

... I fully agree with your dislike of the GW business. And even the rulebooks themselves are outrageously expensive. There are in fact some ressources on the web were people came up with their own rule systems for skirmishes, but I forgot where Anyway, I wouldn't recommend the full "Warhammer" as it's relying quite a bit on formations which are hard to make with Prince August figures. A solution could be a "PA skirmish" system, but who's gonna do the work?

by the looks of things no one! but if anyone has come across existing rules in this area they could recomend id be gratefull. by the way does anyone in ireland use the fantasy range for wargaming? cheers Years ago my cousins in Cork and their friends used to have very big games with the fantasy range, I spectated a few of them... can't remember the rules anymore. I adapted a generic rules set myself to suit the fantasy figures... again this was years ago but I'll see if I can find them somewhere.

I am slowly trying to make a ruleset based on the D20 system.
I had created an alpha version rulesset for the Iron Crown Enterprises HARP system, but since they didn't do anything with the system, I decided to make my own using the D20 OGL.
It's slow going - especially since there are other factors in my life right now. But once they are done, or at least ready for test, I will post 'em here.

"Hordes of the Things" by Wargames Research Group is a great set of fantasy wargame rules. Games can be completed in a few hours, the troop types are widely applicable to various fantasy genres, armies can be created without (or with!) a massive investment in figures, and the quick play campaign system can involve as few or as many players as you want.

ya in my brief research into rules(free) online, hordes of the things seemed to match what i wanted the best. have yet to playtest as havnt build up 2 fair sized armys to slog it out. the release of the 32mm series has presented me with a wee prob though.it lokks like they will be far better to look at,so what does one do? abandon creating 25mm armies or would the 2 gell well? cheers

Well. Late answer.
I have used a book called "Might of Arms" in my games. With little modification it is suitable for fantasy armies.

I'll probably have the bones of the rules/setting thing posted here in a few weeks, all being well.

I still use the Massed Battle module of AD&D, easy p;aying, and easy to create stats for new troop types.
