Hello,
I recently ordered some bismuth to alloy with my casting metal. I understand it expands on cooling to help achieve detail. Antimony does something similar, I'm told. What percentage bismuth do folks recommend?

I'm a curious person. How much did you pay for that stuff? Where did you order it from and why? Sorry though I can't answer your question. I am a junk lead user and have no idea what my lead has for composition.

You know, I am curious too. I found a metal resourcer that will make custom alloys. I just don't know how much bismuth to request per pound (roughly 453.5 grams ).
My problem is that I love in Las Vegas and they have some pretty strict ( and overly anal ) lead laws here. My HOA is non-too-keen on the idea of me casting lead figures from my garage. So I am pretty much left with a zinc/tin alloy or tin/antimony alloy for figure casting. However, most of these metals don't included bismuth which from my understand it pretty critical when it comes to catching fine detail.
It'd be nice to have some idea what percentages are best recommended but I guess a lot of it is trial and error.

I do not know what would happen if you use bismuth with a larger mix of tin and no lead. Our 5 star metal has about 5 percent tin and 5 percent antimony in it but no bismuth.
