Is it possible to reclaim the metal from a damaged DelPrado figure? If so how would I go about it? Is the metal suitable for Prince August molds, would the paint have to be removed before attemting to melt the figure, is there anything else I need to know before I try this? You may have guessed that I am new to this hobby and any help would be appreciated.

If you melt it you will need to mix in more metal as well to allow for the extra parts of any cast mould, including ingates and venting parts. These parts are cut off afterwards but are needed to make the cast successful. ALWAYS remove any paint first. Impurities will almost certainly cause problems. If the figure has acrylic paint then use Turps to remove it. There are move powerful paint strippers if the paint is stubborn. You could experiment with the metal, afterall you can reuse it again if at first you fail in your attempts. Tell us how it works out. Read our tutorials on casting to help cover the basics in technique if your are new. Good Luck

Thanks for the tips. The tutorials are excellent. The figure in question is quite large, one of the Cavalry Issue (Bounced down the stairs and damaged beyond repair) and I am Casting from a 25mm mould, so volume of metal should not be a problem. It will be a while before I can give any results as I am waiting a for a replacement before melting this one down.

Not to dispute PA but I'm an experimenter with metals for my moulds. I use reclaimed lead from just about any source and have had no problems of any kind. However, many of my finished pieces are all over the place as to finished colors. Probably due to some Tin, Zinc, Copper, dirt and who knows what. As to removing paint from old lead I just take it outside and hit it with a Butane Torch until the smoke stops. My neighbors don't like me much.
