Hello everyone.
I was so glad to see this message board as a part of the website. I plan to leave comments and pics out here.
First I wanted to give a great big thank you to Joan who was a huge help to me recently. Really appreciate the amazing customer service she provided.
I have a little story about how I got into casting. My son was going to take over the General Manager position at a motel in our town of Fredericksburg, TX. Very cute little town founded by German immigrants and is a very hot tourist location in Texas today.
He mentioned he would love a chess set in his lobby during while we were decorating. I thought the best set would be of The Alamo because of our proximity to the actual battle site. So I began looking for Alamo chess pieces on the internet. The only set I could find was on Price August.
Here is the funny part...I did not realize they were casting molds and thought they were the pieces. They were perfect so I ordered them. When they came in I was puzzled. They were the opposite of chess pieces!! After my initial shock, I realized that I had always wanted to try casting. I turned right around and ordered the beginners kit and I was hooked. Since then I have been using craft boards from the retail store, painting them and hinging them together to make a box. Your molds and the pieces I cast with them make it amazing. People love them, I will post some pics so y'all can see what I mean.
Just love the new hobby and this place. I am a very chatty person so I plan to post often. My only question is if there is anyway to shine the pieces. We are practicing panting them but don't have the skill yet. We are making one side darker with black paint (quickly wiped off) but looking for options to shine up the other side.
Thanks so much.

Hi Matt, glad to see you have caught the casting bug ! In answer to your question about polishing your pieces......you should try casting with pewter ( a little bit more difficult but worth the extra effort ) the pieces polish up really well . If you search the P A site there is a how to do it on making the aposing side darker , I think it's antiquing .
Best regards, Allan

Thank you for the reply Allan. It is so nice to hear from someone. I will give your suggestion a try. Right now we are very pleased with the results because the mold metal give the pieces a kind of "ancient" look. We are also painting the bases per a picture we saw on the website.
Very fun new hobby and the people at our Trade Days once a month love them.
What kind of casting do you do? Also chess pieces?

Hi Matt, yes I do cast chess pieces I'm painting a set at the moment ( medevial set from PA ) this is about the 7th set that I've cast and painted also make the chess boards for, I normally also use old cutlery boxes or slide boxes to set them in customising each one to the size of the pieces. The most challenging set was the Jacobite rising set which is only a 32 mm size , to paint the tartan needed on these pieces very difficult but I was very pleased with the results,I must try post my sets on the gallery the only thing is my photo skills are not that great ! I would LOVE to see some pics of what you are doing. I have a few to put out here of what we are doing. Making the boards out of wood canvas that is all the rage here right now.

Matt, I live in Georgetown, Texas, and have several Prince August molds. I have not used them for decades and would like to talk to you about them. I might be willing to trade the molds for some castings from them. I'm getting old and still enjoy painting them but not the casting. If you are interested, please let me know. One is a chess set that I can no longer find online and another is elves. I think I bought them in the 70's. Helen
