I want to push the idea of ROMAN molds, maybe 40mm, maybe a different scale, with separate shields / arms. So this is your chance to submit your ideas about this.
I hope to show this to Chris and my boss this November when we plan next years releases.
So tell us why one scale is better than another, what types of Roman soldiers do you want, what era is preferred (to begin), what enemies would be good (maybe Gauls). If you want to send in sketchs, then do so. E-mail them to me, keep them small jpegs. Post them to me at PA, but whatever is sent in WILL not be returned so no originals.

Just to make my point again, I'm a great fan of Romans, wheather its the early Rise of the Roman Empire, the Republic Era, the time of the Caesars or Emperors. For over a millenium the Romans influenced Europe and Asia, so whatever century is a good one. You could start with the fall of the Empire and work backwards or maybe, just pitch it at the popular era of the Roman Soldiers with the Red Tunic and the Square Shields. Enemies range from the germanic tribes, to the picts to the Visigoths and Vandals plus many more. Whatever is decided will be exciting, although my preference is particularly for 25mm as I use the ones that were sold before.

Romans! What a great idea! Although my first preference is always for 54mm my second choice would be 40mm and I will almost certainly buy them regardless of scale. As to era my preference would be Punic Wars or late Republican. For one thing the list of opponents is larger and more varied and the Gauls (Celts, Ancient British, Irish, Galatian all are more or less the same) is a very good first choice for their opponent. These can serve by themselves against a Caesarian army or could be part of a Carthaginian one. Either way lots of potential there.
By the by, what are the pluses and minuses of doing the same figures in different scales? Is it cost prohibitive for you or can you make different scale copies fairly easily once the master is made? Many companies which offer 1/72 plastics find that they can scale them up to 1/32 with few problems. That would offer something for everybody!

i think they shuld be 25mm because i believe dat is quite a standard wargaming scale but den u lose the spare peices unless its possible of increasing the mould to fit them in ?! But i havnt heard of ur ancients range wuld there be any opponents for the forces ?!

40mm would be the best scale. The current vikings can double as saxons. Most table top gaming mini's are begining to creep up into the 40mm range. 40mm is close enough in scale that you can mix with the 32mm fantasy army lines and not be horribly out of scale (games workshop is still keeping fairly much to 32mm but I've seen other fantasy mini's lately, especially the newer D&D plastic minis, that are pushing 40mm).
As for period, I'd suggest a period that used the easily identifiable loric and gladius. I'd also suggest that there be a couple mould suitable for bulk pouring (not requiring attachment of a shield or weapon). Something about Romans makes people want to fight large field engagement.

The ancient and early medieval molds are still available but some of them are missing. www.princeaugust.ie/ancient/index.htmlI would think that the new romans would be much better quality as we have learned a lot about mould making over the intervening years.

I would love to see them in 25mm, or better even 28mm

If not in 28/30mm then 40mm. Starting with "Early Imperial" or "Late Republic" style troops would be best. Coolious (sp?) helmet and chain mail armor with square shield would be my preference. Could it be I'm influenced by watching "ROME" on HBO? Also, please, please be sure they are in appropriate poses: Marching with Pilum Advancing with either pilum or sword drawn* and shield faced front and forward. Otherwise they won't rank up and look proper and who wouldn't want to rank up their romans! ;D *The sword should be about mid level to the shield and pointing the same way as the facing of the shield. The shield should always be protecting the front if advancing or the side if marching. Please avoid dopey or sloppy poses like the shield being faced away from the body so it's doing absolutely no good. Or worse, a pose with the sword cutting down from overhead! I'm a wargamer, if you make them so I can rank them and they look "correct" then I'll buy into this like you wouldn't believe. If they are anything else, they're useless to me. I can get dopey posed romans in any scale I want these days please don't join that club. Imagine a Cohort in 40mm at 1:1 scale? If the poses are right, I'll do it. ;D

Molds: Legionary Trooper (see poses in above post) Scorpions - Need the artillery. Centurion/Optio - Must have the officer/NCO types. Cavalry - Go for the one with Coolus helmet, mail, large round sheild with spear. Oh and the helmet should have the elongated plume (like the later Praetorian Guard used) like this: www.thedragonstreasure.com/imperial-roman-helmet-8112.jpgbarbarians - Saxons may do for now but some Gauls or poorly dressed Germans would be good. If you pick the Republican Era then Rome vs. Carthage could be an option.

All I can say is wow!. That is a great selection of links. We will take note. If you find any more ideal poses tell us. This is really useful info. Many Thanks. Just seeing all those soldiers makes me want to get these molds made even more.

Impressive but costly. With a few of our molds you could cast an army of hundreds for a tiny fraction of that cost.

What an excellent idea I think they should be possibly in the fall of the Roman Empire and they should be in 32 or 40 maybe in 25.
